On June 4, CLBC’s South Island Community Planning and Development office participated for the first time in the Sidney Access Awareness Day resource fair. The fair is organized by the municipal Access Awareness committee, which was established through the work of Jeannette Hughes, a woman who worked tirelessly until her passing to make Sidney more accessible to people of all abilities. The Town now awards a Jeannette Hughes Award each year to people who are making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities; this year, Ms. Hughes’ daughter presented the award to the Sidney White Cane Club for the support and connection they provide to people with low-vision or blindness. Over 100 people attended the resource fair, award ceremony, door prize draw and barbecue.

It's #NationalVolunteerWeek, a time to celebrate the significant contributions that volunteers make to our communities. CLBC Community Council volunteers make a difference in many ways. They help build awareness of the importance of having a community where everyone belongs. They work together to advance inclusive housing, build relationships with Indigenous leaders, and identify employers who provide meaningful work for people with developmental disabilities. Councils provide leadership opportunities for self-advocates and work on projects with municipalities, like mapping and sharing places for social connection.Read more about how CLBC Community Council volunteers are making a difference and learn more about opportunities to volunteer here: ow.ly/GGRm50Rjvjo ...
