standard: Each individual has the opportunity to take part in daily activities and participate with as few restrictions as possible in typical home living.
rationale: A variety of daily living experiences assist individuals with developmental disabilities to attain lifestyles, appearances and behaviour that are valued by society as well as by the individual. To achieve this, there must be opportunities for growth and development in the lives of all individuals.
As a home sharing provider, it is your responsibility to encourage and support the individual’s daily activities in the home and community.
The Activities standard requires you to help the individual you support participate in activities that are meaningful to the individual. It also requires you to promote a level of engagement in day-to-day life that most citizens would be able and expected to enjoy.
Promising practice includes the following:
- The individual’s skill development is encouraged and supported.
- The individual participates in preferred, meaningful, interesting, and challenging activities in the home and community.
To see the Activities standard in action, watch Part 2 of Amber’s story.
Amber spends a lot of time in the community and enjoys riding, swimming, and hiking on her trail rider. She is very much included in the day-to-day life of her home sharing provider and the family. Amber is meeting new people and feels understood.
Each individual should be supported to learn skills that encourage future independence. A variety of daily living experiences help individuals to attain lifestyles, appearances, and behaviours that are valued by both society and the individuals. To achieve this, there must be opportunities for growth and development in the lives of all individuals. Individuals should have the opportunity and means to communicate their wishes and feelings, to develop satisfying social relationships, and to develop skills that promote maximum independence.
