CLBC Community Councils around the province will be hosting presentations with author and speaker Janet Klees as part of Community Living Month. Janet has been involved in the lives of people with disabilities, their families, and allies in community for over 30 years. She is currently Executive Director of the Durham Association for Family Respite Services, a values-based organization which provides a range of resources and supports to families as they plan and develop individualized lifestyle arrangements in community for and with their family members. Previously Janet was a co-ordinator with the family-governed Deohaeko Support Network where she worked with a family group who planned and built a 105-unit housing cooperative where their seven family members are among over 200 typical neighbours who intentionally try to build a good community together. Janet will share stories and experiences from this work.

Join other families for a conversation with Janet Klees about her 30+ years working with individuals and families to help adults with diverse abilities live meaningful, involved and secure lives in their communities.

This session will explore ways to draw on and draw out the power of families coming together in a principled, committed framework that will stand the test of time and circumstance. Through stories and examples, the presentation will clarify the conditions and supports in which families and family groups can most easily grow and thrive. We will touch on both what families need to work out for themselves (principles) as well as the supports and resources that ought to be externally available. This session will draw on a broader range of experiences from across Canada and also around the world, including DAFRS, the current family resource and support organization with which Janet is currently involved.

There will be enough time for questions and answers.
