Self-Advocates

Mary Emmond

Victoria

Mary is a very active member of the community. As well as being a member of the SI Community Council, she is a board member of Community Living Victoria. She volunteers at Literacy Victoria, has two part-time jobs and participates in the Special Olympics and Hospice Swim-a-thon.

Family Members

Carol Antoine

Tsawout Reserve

Has a son with Cerebral Palsy. She wants to explore new approaches to service delivery and share information with Aboriginal Communities.

Louise Doucet

Salt Spring Island

Louise is the parent of an adult child who lives in the family home. Louise currently sits on the board of the Gulf Island Together Society.

Michael Hayes

Michael is the father of a dependent handicapped child, aged 15. He is an academic with research interests in health, disability and social policy.

Bill Hustler (Vice Chair)

Victoria

Proud parent of an adult child who lives happily in small group home in Victoria. Part of my responsibility on Council has been to recruit new members who would like to help make life better for people who have a developmental disability.

Roger Palmer

Parent of a mentally disabled adult son. He has been involved in the Special Olympics in Victoria for five years, coordinating Fund-raising and Publicity.

Sharon Sinclair

Sharon is the sister of an adult sibling who is happily living in a group home in Victoria. Sharon and her parents were part of the group that founded FACTS, a nonprofit society, to support Glendale residents though their move to the community. She has worked in the support area for many years and has also volunteered fro the Garth Homer Society and the Board for Volunteer Victoria.

David Steeves (Chair)

David is a parent of a dependent handicapped child and has an extensive professional and volunteer background in Alberta. The family moved to Victoria in 2006 where they continue to focus on establishing a network of inclusion for their son. David now volunteers for the Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network (PLAN) and helped establish a Registered Disability Savings Plan for disabled citizens.

Mary Valeriote

Victoria

Mary is the parent of an adult child with a developmental disability and has sat on the boards of the Ontario Rett Syndrome Association and the Oakville Association for Community Living.

Community Members

Dr. Sharon Bearpark

Dr. Bearpark is a committed advocate for those who may not have a voice within the traditional education, health and social services sectors. A graduate of McMaster University, in the 20 years she has been in Victoria she has worked in both public and private sectors as a consultant in child, youth, family and community health.

Rosemary Juszko

Victoria

Rosemary’s volunteer community involvement in the past has included sitting on the BCACL board as well as the Citizen’s Advocacy Board. She is currently a contractor with Lifetime Networks Victoria.

Bev Kissinger

Bev has a strong belief that we all belong. Bev has been a volunteer with the Family Support Institute since 1986 and served on the board for six years. Bev currently works a a Family Support Worker with Community Living Victoria and is very knowledgeable of the benefits various provincial programs offer to families.

Roberta Scott

Victoria

Operates Integra Support Services Ltd., a multi-service host agency contracted by CLBC. She is President of Envision Society for Choice and Inclusion, a support network for self advocates, families and Home Sharing Contractors. She has also been a Home Share Contractor for 30 years.
