Student Practicums
We work with Canadian universities and colleges to host unpaid practicum placements for degree students pursuing careers in community living services and social policy.
Social Work and Child and Youth Care Students
CLBC has placement opportunities for third and fourth year Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Child and Youth Care students in our offices throughout B.C.
Highlights of our practicum experience include:
- Engaging in service planning with individuals and families.
- Learning about and working with other government bodies and service providers.
- Increasing knowledge of community resources for adults with developmental disabilities.
- Gaining an understanding of the roles within CLBC.
- Learning about relevant legislation, and potential to apply this legislation in practice.
There may also be the opportunity to shadow one of our Quality Service Analysts to learn about the contracting and funding side of services.
Would you like to learn more about social services policy?
Our Policy team also accepts practicum placements. If this area interests you, let your Field Coordinator know.
A practicum placement with our Policy and Governance team is tailored to your specific goals and interests. You will draft learning objectives and identify ways in which these goals can be accomplished through work that aligns with CLBC’s overarching mandate, and with the current work of the Policy and Governance team.
Highlights of this practicum experience include:
- An in-depth orientation on CLBC’s mandate, services, structure, governance, etc.
- Carrying out elements of the policy process (e.g. research and engagement, conducting policy scans, drafting decision notes and developing policy)
- Working with and learning from colleagues from within the team and from other business areas at CLBC, either as part of projects or part of operational work.
- Opportunities to participate in meetings with partners across government and the community living sector.

Student testimonial
“My placement at CLBC was a great learning experience. I was given many learning opportunities to understand and work with individuals with diverse abilities. CLBC has given me a lot of support to apply, practice and utilize my skills and knowledge that I learned in the classroom into a field setting. Additionally, throughout my placement here at CLBC, I was able to make connections with not only individuals associated with CLBC, but with colleagues in the office who made the work environment positive.”
