Every year, starting on the last Sunday in May, Canadians celebrate National AccessAbility Week (NAAW).
Running from May 26 to June 1, 2024, this week is an opportunity to:
- celebrate the valuable contributions and leadership of Canadians with disabilities.
- highlight the work of people, organizations and communities that are removing barriers.
- reflect on ongoing efforts to become a better, more accessible, more inclusive Canada.
Over the past year, CLBC has marked significant milestones in our work to remove barriers and improve accessibility for people with disabilities interacting with or working at CLBC.
These include:
- releasing CLBC’s 2023-26 Accessibility Plan.
- establishing a new CLBC Accessibility Advisory Committee with representation of the people and families CLBC serves.
- launching a CLBC Accessibility feedback mechanism including the ability to request alternate formats.
- working with staff and partners including CLBC Community Councils, the Accessibility Advisory Committee and Indigenous Relations Team on a strategy to make CLBC’s spaces more welcoming, including land acknowledgment ceremonies.
- creating and implementing Communication for Everyone boards to support communication with people who are non-speaking and/or use picture based communication systems.

Origins of NAAW
Founded as ‘National Access Awareness Week’ in 1988 and inspired by Rick Hansen’s Man In Motion World Tour, this week is an opportunity to celebrate Canadians with disabilities and raise awareness of the critical need for accessibility and inclusion for all in our communities and workplaces.
