Doug Tennant, Executive Director of Sehmiahmoo House Society in Surrey, has been working hard for many years to ensure that the dream of having a home becomes a reality for many of the people they support. In 2004, Sehmiahmoo House purchased four separate residential lots next to their head office; and beginning this year, the first purpose-built affordable rental option in Surrey in three decades will break ground. The project will include 71 units, of which 20 will be made available to tenants with developmental disabilities as either rentals or long-term leases, and 51 will be offered to the general public at affordable, below-market rates.
“Having your own key to your own home can be a life changing experience” said Community Living BC CEO, Seonag Macrae. “Most people take this for granted, but having your own home is empowering; it provides safety, stability, a sense of belonging and improved quality of life. This is another great example of a CLBC service provider being innovative and making positive impacts in their community.”
