In recognition of National Volunteer Week (April 27 – May 4), Community Living BC extends our heartfelt gratitude to the many dedicated individuals who volunteer their time, passion, and lived experience to strengthen our organization and the communities we serve.
Since 2007, CLBC Community Councils, the Provincial Advisory Committee (PAC), and the Indigenous Advisory Committee have played a vital role in shaping CLBC’s direction, helping to ensure the voices of people with developmental disabilities remain at the heart of our work. These volunteers — individuals receiving services, their families, service provider staff, and community allies — work together to strengthen inclusion, self-advocacy, and communities they live in.
There are 12 CLBC Community Councils across the province, each composed of 7 to 15 members who work collaboratively to promote culturally safe, accessible, and inclusive communities. Councils are a key part of CLBC’s governance structure and work alongside CLBC to help achieve goals related to community inclusion and full citizenship for those we support.
One member from each Council is appointed by the CLBC Board of Directors to sit on the Provincial Advisory Committee. The PAC is a legislated committee that provides insights and recommendations to CLBC’s Board and staff on policies and practices that enhance the quality of life for the people we serve.
The Indigenous Advisory Committee works equally to provide critical guidance, ensuring Indigenous voices and perspectives are respected and embedded in our ongoing work toward reconciliation and cultural safety.
We know people have a choice about where they give their time. During National Volunteer Week and every week, we are grateful to all who choose to support CLBC in this way. Your insights, leadership, and commitment are essential to the community living and self-advocacy civil rights movements — and to building a more inclusive British Columbia for everyone.
