Congratulations to the CLBC North Shore Sunshine Coast Community Council who recently hosted Beyond Walls: Inclusive Housing, an event that brought together over 100 people to learn about and promote the importance of inclusive housing for all.

Inclusive housing means that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the right to choose where to live and with whom to live, the right to own or rent their home and the right to create a personal home environment, where choices, possessions and privacy are respected.

Attendees included self-advocacy leaders, families, service providers, city planners, developers, MLA representatives, and CLBC staff. The event highlighted exciting housing projects and partnerships that are making a difference in the community for people and families served by CLBC, featuring:

  • Personal stories from Self-Advocates with lived experience.
  • Learning opportunities, interactive activities, and resource sharing.
  • Guest speakers from CLBC’s Community Engagement and Housing teams.
  • Guest speakers from organizations who are advancing inclusive housing initiatives:
Uniti offers quality services to people with developmental disabilities and their support networks. They provide affordable and inclusive rental housing in Surrey and work to increase awareness about inclusion, advocacy and disability rights through community engagement. Click here to view Uniti’s presentation.
For over 50 years, SPARC BC has worked in partnership with individuals, organizations and all levels of government to meet the social development needs of people and communities to promote positive social policy change. They are committed to the values of social justice, inclusion, integrity and learning, to advance their vision of a just and healthy society for all. Click here to view SPARC BC’s presentation.

A huge thank-you to the North Shore Sunshine Coast Community Council for organizing this impactful event and their continued efforts to build inclusive communities for all.
