Hockey without limits on display at first provincial tournament

On June 11, 2025, the city of Victoria came alive with excitement as it hosted a special floor hockey tournament for adults with diverse abilities. The event took place at SJ Willis School and brought together teams from across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

The games were played 4-on-4 with goalies, and all the gear was provided. This made it easy for anyone to join in, have fun, and feel included. The tournament used a round-robin format, meaning each team played several games before the day wrapped up with an exciting championship match and trophy presentation.

The idea for this tournament came from Peter Buitendyk, a CLBC facilitator. He was inspired by a similar program in Surrey run by another CLBC facilitator. That program helped build strong friendships and a real sense of belonging, and Peter wanted to bring the same spirit to Vancouver Island.

The tournament was made possible thanks to many generous supporters: Community Living BC, Kardel, Garth Homer Society, Country Grocer, Coastal Community Credit Union, Island Ball Hockey Association, and BW Hockey. These sponsors helped provide funding, gear, food, and encouragement.

But this was more than just a hockey event. It was the result of hard work building community through sport. Peter had started a simple drop-in hockey group in Victoria. Over time, it became a welcoming and supportive space where everyone felt included, no matter their ability.

Players trained hard for the tournament. Some worked out, some started swimming or hiking, and one player — Jacob — got his own goalie gear and even had his glove signed by NHL legend Curtis Joseph!

Jacob appreciates the opportunity to play sports while making new friends.

“I started playing this year after Christmas,” says Jacob. “I love meeting other people, understanding what their barriers are, and seeing how I can help.”

His advice for those who have never played and want to get started? “Give it a try. You can come and watch, people will be there to support and help you while you learn. The invitation is open!”

The tournament also had a special guest: Micah Zandee-Hart from the Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team. She met many of the players, who were thrilled to talk with someone of her caliber.

Most importantly, this event created lasting friendships and boosted confidence. People met outside of hockey too, building connections that went beyond the game.

As one player said, “It wasn’t just about hockey — it was about connection.”

It truly was an unforgettable day full of fun, inclusion, and community spirit.
